Thailand's parliament on Friday elected the 37-year-old successor to a powerful and polarizing dynasty, two days after it expelled the prime minister in the country's last-ditch hit to democracy.

The election of Peton Thaksin Shinawatra, the daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, as the new prime minister is the final turning point in the political crisis that shook Thailand.

On Thursday night, it was also revealed that Petton was the choice of a government role, and questions were raised about how long that would continue. She is unpopular.
