'Monkeypox' Re-proliferation of M-Fox...WHO Declares State of Emergency

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared an international public health emergency (PHEIC) on the 14th (local time) against MPOX (formerly known as monkeypox),

which is rapidly spreading in Africa, and warned of the possibility of a global resurgence. The emergency is the highest level of alert issued by the WHO in relation to the epidemic, and it is the first re-declaration in a year and three months since May last year.

On the same day, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus accepted the outcome of discussions by the International Health Covenant Emergency Committee, which consists of experts, and declared a state of emergency against M.Fox. Once declared, the WHO can strongly push for research, funding and international health measures to curb the disease.

According to the emergency committee, it seems that they agreed that the most intensive response to the disease is necessary, considering the rapid spread of Empox in Africa and the relatively weak medical capabilities of the countries with outbreaks. Since May 2022, Empox, an endemic disease in Midwest Africa, has spread to countries around the world. The disease often shows symptoms of a blistering rash, and may be accompanied by acute fever, headache, and muscle pain.

According to the WHO, there have been more than 15,600 infections in the Democratic Republic of the Congo since the beginning of this year, of which 537 have died. It has already exceeded the total number in the country last year. In addition, at least 13 out of 55 countries on the African continent have reported outbreaks this year, including some countries that have never reported cases of M.Fox infection.

Meanwhile, Empox can be transmitted through respiratory droplets, as well as close physical contact, such as patients' bodily fluids, contaminated bedding, and sexual intercourse. The incubation period is about 5 to 21 days. Compared to COVID-19, the transmission power is lower, but the fatality rate is as high as 3-6%. Preventive vaccines and antiviral treatments are available.
